Brief history:

 
Maharaja Sawai Jaisingh I started the construction of this palace. He ruled between 1699 to 1744. He shifted the capital from Amer to Jaipur due to the rise in population and acute shortage of water. The palace was the residence of the royal family even after Jaipur kingdom merged with the Indian Union post-independence.
 
The entry gates to the City Palace are Virendra Pol, Udai Pol near Jaleb chowk and the Tripolia Gate (triple gate). The Virendra Pol takes you to the Mubarak Mahal.  This is a museum which has the royal costumes displayed. This museum has large clothes of Sawai Madhosingh who was bulky and weighed 250 kgs and had 108 wives.
 
The Chandra Mahal is a 7 storeyed building and each storey is given a specific name like Sukh-Niwas, Ranga-Mandir, Pitam-Niwas, Chabi-Niwas, Shri-Niwas and Mukut-Mandir or Mukut Mahal. On the wall, you will see paintings, mirror work etc. On the top of the Mahal is the flag of the royal family. The Pritam Niwas Chowk is the inner courtyard from where you can enter the Chandra Mahal.
 
The Diwani-i-am is a lovely chamber which is now an art gallery which has several beautiful exhibits. On the ceiling are ancient original manuscripts. The Diwani-i-khaas is located between the armoury and art gallery. Here you will find to large sterling silver vessels. They are the largest sterling silver vessels in the world. 
 
The Maharani palace which was the residence of the queens is now a museum that displays weapons. In the Bagghi kahan there are old carriages, palanquins and European cabs adopted as baggis to Indian situations. You will also find the Govind Dev Ji temple in the City Palace. At a distance of around 5 kms is the Jal mahal which is a palace in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake.
